Chester City Blog: CHA and Widener University students Mark MLK Day with Children's Learning Activities

Activities linked to Dr. Martin Luther King highlighted the holiday Monday for children at the Chester Housing Authority's Booker T. Washington Community Center. As their Day of Service, 20 students from Widener University planned and oversaw crafts and other activities for the kids and even served them lunch.Following lunch, the approximately 35 children spent time at different stations.

At one station they expressed through art how they would change the world. At another they created a peace patchwork. And in the computer lab they will do a Martin Luther King word search. The Widener volunteers come through the school's Office of Civic Engagement.

Volunteer leader Ashley Diriendo says the whole city Chester is part of the Widener community, and the students feel fortunate to be able to work with CHA children.

"We appreciate Widener's support and the relationship the housing authority has with Widener students," said CHA board member Catherine Feminella, who helped arrange the event with board chair Sheila Church. "The Widener students and these children form a bond that exemplifies Dr. King's message."
