Nearly three dozen people came to the Ruth L. Bennett Community Farm on Saturday to dig in the dirt and pull up the weeds in a major effort to get the farm prepared for this year’s growing and distribution season.

“It’s an annual event that we do,” Natania Schaumburg, farm manager, said, adding that this weekend’s was the eighth.

“It’s just a great way to kick off the season,” she said. “There’s always a lot to do. It’s an incredibly busy time of year coming off of winter, especially this last winter into spring. It’s just an awesome way to have an influx of hands and get the spaces ready.”

The farm spreads over 2 acres in the back of the Ruth Bennett Community in Chester and houses more than 100 raised beds, two greenhouses, and an orchard.
