Delaware County Daily Times: Community Briefs: Volunteers help Bennett Community Farm prepare for summer

CHESTER — The Chester Housing Authority’s Ruth Bennett Community Farm hosted a day of service in honor of Earth Day on Saturday, April 24. About 50 volunteers from CHA, Crozer Health and the city gathered to help prep the farm for the busy summer season.

Farm Manager Natania Schaumburg led volunteers in various activities, including weeding garden beds, placing 30 new beds and filling with soil and compost, stormwater management, and trash pick-up around the grounds.

The volunteers’ efforts will help CHA’s biweekly food distribution for residents, particularly seniors. The distribution was established last April, as part of CHA’s response to the Covid-19 crisis and was restarted this month. Every other week, residents will be able to pick up nutritious and organic fresh food including salad greens and spinach, carrots, onions, potatoes, apples, strawberries and eggs.

“Although they may not receive the attention they deserve, there are positive things happening in Chester in every day,” said CHA Executive Director Steven Fischer. “We especially appreciate our community partners coming out and helping us serve the needs of our residents.”
